Subtitle Workshop – The Ultimate Subtitle Tool for Game Developers
Why We Created Subtitle Workshop
When we were working on Going Down, a dialogue-heavy game, we realised that handling subtitles manually was slow and frustrating. We had our own custom subtitle format, but before Subtitle Workshop existed, we had to write and format every subtitle file by hand.
That meant transcribing the dialogue, manually scrubbing through audio files to find precise start and end times, and formatting everything correctly. A single line of dialogue could take ten minutes to subtitle, and with hours of dialogue to process, it quickly became a bottleneck.
Instead of struggling through it, we built Subtitle Workshop—a tool to speed up the process and make localisation easier. Now, instead of spending hours wrestling with subtitle files, we can edit, sync, and export subtitles in minutes. Best of all, we can simply share portable project files with translators, so they can work with our existing subtitle data without needing to edit raw files.
Since then, we’ve refined Subtitle Workshop into a powerful, easy-to-use tool for any game developer who needs to integrate subtitles seamlessly into their project.
What Is Subtitle Workshop?

The tool was built for Game Maker, but the subtitle format (.sbtl
) is easily adaptable for other engines if needed.
